96x Beggars Coming to Town by Paintings by Norman Neasom (1915 - 2010)

Beggars Coming to Town
Watercolour: Signed and dated 1996
Image Area: 380mm x 305mm
Once every year the Beggars were allowed into the town of Redditch to beg for food or money. They would need to get permission from the Monks at Bordesley Abbey. The rest of the year the beggars banned from entering the town to beg
Punishments in the 15th century were extremely harsh resulting in being flogged or worse, as can be seen in the drawing titled "Through the Window" in this exhibition
Again one of Norman's favourite names for a public house "The Golden Heart" is used in this painting
This work is in a private collection
